In a world of monsters—some of them wild, and others who have risen to the top of the social elite—it’s hard to determine the heroes from the villains. After the death of the king and queen fourteen years ago, Princess Jocasta is determined to complete the ritual that will make her the rightful ruler of Magog. For that, she must travel into the Monsterwood. Meanwhile, a scrappy youth named Jovis flees the city, pursued by guards, determined to find his own path to a new future outside the city’s walls. Together, they begin to realize that everything they thought they knew is a lie—and that the two of them hold the keys to Magog’s future.
Inspired by the works of Jim Henson and brought to life through Rosen’s own sculptures, the characters of Monsterwood are reminiscent of fantasy films of the 1980s, such as Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. The creatures that populate the pages are at once fearsome and beautiful, and the story that propels them forward has the familiar beats of a hero's journey in a lush original fantasy setting.
